Okay, this one’s about dying. Don’t make that box bigger or read any further if you don’t want to deal with that right now.

That last panel wasn’t meant to be so violent looking. I don’t think my dad killed himself. Maybe, but no one told me about it if he did.

Warning: I’m gonna ramble about death here.

People dying is that one thing we’re all going to have to deal with, unless you don’t care about ANYONE or you kick off first. Unless it’s happening to someone you just don’t care about or someone you severely hate, or you really just have no emotions, it’s going to be a kick in the gut, and you’re not going to be able to get over it, no matter what your beliefs. Even if you think you’ll see someone in heaven, you’re going to have to go through this life without her or him, and that could be quite a while.
Death is part of life and the way the universe works. Everything dies. Everything is slowing, undergoing entropy, spinning slower and slower, and all names that we know to be important will be lost to the passage of time. If you really want to get into it, on a galactic scale, we’re nothing, on a universal scale, our entire planet wouldn’t register. We’re not even a blip on the scale of time and space, unless you measure from the beginning of our lives to the end.
I like to think that the first law of thermodynamics applies to our own deaths on this planet, that our energy doesn’t simply disappear. This doesn’t mean that we go to heaven or hell or that we’re reincarnated as something else, but the star stuff that we’re made of doesn’t fade into nothing, it keeps going. Whether or not you want to believe that your soul or whatever will keep going on, there’s something beautiful about our remains going on to benefit another living thing, probably mold or any of the detrivores that make new fertile soil, and that will go on to grow new plants, which will be consumed by some other creature, which will work its way as far up as it can before it goes back to the soil. That’s why i’d rather be buried straight, no box, or if there is a box, just a cardboard box that will deteriorate quickly and allow whatever’s left to be broken down so that it benefits the rest of life.
Of course, there’s the much less comforting idea of all life on Earth being exterminated by SOMETHING INCREDIBLY STUPID THAT WE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF IN ADVANCE, or something less stupid that should’ve been researched and avoided, but that’s something to talk about some other time.

Project X Zone wallpaper is loaded with characters. Perhaps overloaded. This is an irresponsible number of crossover game characters to put on someone’s desktop. If you download it, you run a risk of having some of your icons camouflaged out of existence.

Anyway, PSA time: Wear a helmet if you’re riding your bike. I’ve been nearly hit by enough roadies to know that just because you’re being safe doesn’t mean everyone else is.
I didn’t advocate helmet-wearing until i cracked my own helmet. Now i’ve had one too many spills to not wear one. I at the very least avoided an expensive hospital bill, and at the most avoided a serious concussion. My neighbor was hit by a car a few weeks ago, and now he says the same thing. BE SAFE.

Mercenary Kings, the latest from Wizorb developer Tribute Games, featuring animations from Paul Robertson (if it’s not immediately evident from the puppy tank).

I suspect this will ship for XBLA or XBLIG, as well as PC, but it still deserves mention here because these are cool dudes, and we’re always down for whatever they’re working on. Plus, I would be totally into a sprite-based run’n gun with a weapon crafting system.

The project is still in its early prototype stage, and is expected to release some time in 2013.

That PSP art is frame worthy! I love it.

I wish this game had taken off in America more, as it’s actually pretty good! Then again, I wish any puzzle game would gain popularity in the states and this would become an exciting genre again! Although Wario got top billing on the American cover, Bomberman is featured way more in the actual game! And in Japan, Wario isn’t even there at all! What a strange localization decision…

Wario Blast is one of my secret shames from my teenage years. It wasn’t a great game, but it was a a very playable Bomberman in my pocket and that was good enough for me! I mean, hell, every level was, basically, battle mode and then you’d fight a boss - rinse, repeat about 8 times. Plus, it had Wario! Granted, there was nothing unique about Wario, and it was weird when you played as Bomberman since you were then fighting three Warios, but whatever! I wasn’t complaining!

Nintendo E3 Conference (Wednesday Edition)

Nintendo’s second [third?] conference just ended. Tonight focused only on 3DS, which is fine with me. Nothing, that I can recall, was revealed at this conference, which is a bit strange, but they showed a nice bit of gameplay, and a few new things that weren’t shown before in those games.

Anyway, here are some quick impressions from what I remember seeing…

Castlevania - Looks like a lot of fun mechanically, even though it’s a bit bland graphically. Swinging with the whip and the overall pace of the game look great.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 - This is one of my favorite games being displayed this year. The personality of the original looks intact and it just looks like they are really expanding the original game in the right places. I just hope that “3 mansions” doesn’t translate into “a game that over stays it welcome.” A few years ago I would’ve said, “Nah, it’s Nintendo, you can trust them!” but today I just get flashbacks of Spirit Tracks.

Epic Mickey - I can’t put my finger on why, exactly, but this looks like a lot of fun. I think I’ll be waiting for it to hit the $20 bin before I pick it up, though.

Paper Mario 3DS - This is up there with Luigi’s Mansion as my most anticipated game of E3. The diorama presentation is still extremely charming. I love that they ditched the traditional battle system and have gone in a completely new direction. Also interesting that the leveling system is, basically, the “find an item - you’ve leveled up!” mechanic that Zelda basically uses.

New Super Mario Bros 2 - Still looks good. Still looks like Mario. Multiplayer Co-op through the entire game looks as frustrating as it did on Wii.

Kingdom Hearts - It looks like the PS2 Kingdom Hearts. I’m glad people still really enjoy this series, but I’m done and this is not showing me anything to win me back. Well, nothing except Olivia Wade’s character from Tron being in it, but that’s only because I love Olivia Wade.

Lego Batman 2 - zzz

Rabbid Crap - Rabbid crap.

Heroes of Ruin - I want to like this, but that trailer looked incredibly dull.

And then there was other news - the top five downloads on eShop are all free downloads (Is that a good thing?), Pokemon Black & White 2 is coming (we remember)… and I’m sure other tidbits where mentioned, but I’ll be damned if I remember them right now.

What wasn’t shown was a 3DS remodel, which is very disappointing. Hell, I’d even take a new color. But, if nothing else, this reinforced that there are some incredible games coming for 3DS, even if the conference as a whole seemed unnecessary. Why did they show any 3DS titles yesterday if they were just going to show them again today? Why not spend that time showing P-100 or the other Wii U games that are on display on the floor but didn’t get any time yesterday? Only thing I can figure, which I’m pretty confident is probably the fact, is that this show tonight was for us, the gamer. Retail buyers were not going to make their way to a second showing after spending an hour yesterday with Nintendo. Tonight was to show us gamers, “Here are these great looking games that we wanted to show you more of!” and for that I appreciate it. Would it have been nice to see Animal Crossing get a date or for Nintendo to reveal a completely new title? Yeah. But, they could have just shown what was shown yesterday and called it a day. I appreciate the extra effort on their part.
